Fresh off an extensive renovation, Secrets Playa Mujeres Golf & Spa Resort strikes that balance with ease, pairing one of the region’s most spectacular stretches of shoreline with bright new rooms, standout cuisine and cocktails, and a Preferred Club experience that’s genuinely worth the upgrade.
Secrets Playa Mujeres: The Setting
Located just 35 minutes north of Cancún International Airport, the AAA Four Diamond property occupies a prime stretch of Costa Mujeres, where platinum sand beaches, rolling dunes and shimmering Caribbean water — oscillating between turquoise and emerald color palettes — set a decidedly slower pace than the high-rose hotel zone of neighboring Cancún. The protected coastline is wonderfully natural, and during my recent stay I regularly spotted iguanas, coatis and raccoons wandering the verdant grounds. If you keep your eyes peeled, you might even catch a glimpse of the elusive Yucatán gray fox darting through the dunes.
Despite the resort’s expansive footprint, getting around is refreshingly easy. Most of the property is comfortably walkable, while the motor lobby and a handful of restaurants sit a quick golf cart ride away. Better yet, carts can be summoned with the push of a button, and every one I requested arrived within just a few minutes.
Part of Hyatt’s Inclusive Collection, Secrets Playa Mujeres embraces a decidedly modern approach to the all-inclusive concept. There’s no cringe wristband announcing your vacation status, just a seamless experience where gourmet dining, premium drinks, 24-hour room service and attentive hospitality all feel thoughtfully integrated and aligned.
Another welcome perk: guests also enjoy access to neighboring, family-friendly Dreams Playa Mujeres, opening the door to additional restaurants, bars and activities. If you can get past the fact that there will be kids running around, sipping a margarita underneath a waterfall at The Grotto, a swim-up bar, is arguably worth the short stroll over. If you’re a Preferred Club guest, don’t skip the Lazy River.
Secrets Playa Mujeres: The Rooms
Following its recent refresh, all 424 suites feel noticeably brighter and more contemporary, dressed in warm woods, soft neutral tones and understated coastal finishes. Every suite includes a private balcony or terrace, while categories range from tropical view and swim-up to ocean view and (unobstructed) ocean front. Upgraded Preferred Club rooms all boast either an in-balcony soaking tub, swim-up access or private pool, plus premium room locations.
If you’re considering the upgrade, I can attest that Preferred Club here is absolutely where it’s at. Beyond better room locations, the additional dining, lounge and pool access — plus, complimentary Bali beds on the beach — genuinely transform the entire experience at Secrets Playa Mujeres.
I checked into a Preferred Club Junior Suite Ocean View King, where floor-to-ceiling windows gave way to uninterrupted sea views from both the bedroom and balcony. The latter, home to an oversized stone soaking tub practically begging for a leisurely post-dinner soak under the stars. (I relented.) A cleverly designed “secret box” by the door even allows for contactless room service, meaning breakfast can quietly appear without ever interrupting your morning.
For the best room in the house, book the Preferred Club Master Suite Ocean Front with Private Pool — it’s worth the splurge. This spectacular beachfront retreat not only comes with said private pool, but generous indoor and outdoor living space, a double hydrotub, and direct beach access. Did I mention front-row views of the Mexican Caribbean sea?
Secrets Playa Mujeres: The Cuisine
Food can be the Achilles’ heel of an all-inclusive. Fortunately, that’s not the case here.
While the breakfast buffet is perfectly respectable, the ocean-view à la carte breakfast at Ki Ki Ché — reserved exclusively for Preferred Club guests — is reason enough to upgrade. Located atop the brand new Preferred Club Lounge, this rooftop culinary oasis quickly became one of my favorite spots on-property. The chia pudding with açaí, burrata toast and short rib enchiladas all deserve a place on your breakfast table. At night, the open-air destination transforms into a fabulous 7-course chef’s tasting experience that exceeds expectations with every bite. Included complimentary for Preferred Club guests staying at least three nights, otherwise an extra cost for all guests.
By the beach, lunch at Oceana instantly became a daily ritual. Tuna tiradito, gobernador tacos, a chilled glass of Sauvignon Blanc and uninterrupted sea views are a combination I highly recommend repeating.
Dinner hits equally impressive. Ayara, one of the resort’s newest restaurants, pairs very stylish, retro-leaning interiors with bold Central and South American flavors. Think Brazilian Black Angus picanha, chicken churrasco, wild mushroom & miso empanadas, and Amazonian yucca fries. Don’t skip the truffle butter to pair with the warm house bread basket.
According to me Italian food is always a good idea, and at Portofino, it didn’t disappoint. The hazelnut brown butter fig ravioli, braised osso buco and beautifully plated Textured Limoncello dessert all live rent-free in my mind.
After dinner, you can catch the nightly entertainment at Showtime Theater, linger over live piano music in the Lobby Bar, or dance into the early hours at Desires Music Lounge. Cocktail snobs will find the best pre or post-dinner libations served in the Preferred Club lounge, and tea and espresso aficionados, you’ll be glad to know the recently transformed Coco Café serves a wide selection daily from 6am to 11pm.
Secrets Playa Mujeres: Pools & Beach
If there’s one feature that truly steals the show at this resort, it’s the beach.
Playa Mujeres is easily one of the finest stretches of coastline in the Mexican Caribbean — remarkably wide, pleasantly swimmable (though the wind can kick up at times) and ideal for long morning or sunset walks. The water shifts between shades of emerald, seafoam and turquoise throughout the day.
Rows of umbrella-shaded loungers invite leisurely afternoons by the sea, while a beach bar with rustic hanging swings churns out perfectly shaken cocktails and mocktails. Preferred Club guests can further choose to laze away the day in a complimentary, palapa-covered Bali bed — just one more reason to consider the upgrade.
Poolside, the sprawling main pool offers a lively atmosphere with daily activities, a swim-up bar and glimmering ocean-view infinity edge. But I found myself gravitating toward the quieter Preferred Club pool instead. Fringed by complimentary Bali beds and overlooking the sea, it feels like a peaceful sanctuary within the resort — an obvious place to spend long mornings and languid afternoons.
Secrets Playa Mujeres: Spa & Wellness
For those looking to balance beach days with a little self-care, the Secrets Spa offers a curated menu of massages, facials and hydrotherapy — the 80-minute Hot Stone Massage was divine — alongside rotating daily wellness programming offering complimentary experiences such as morning meditation, sound healing and sunrise or sunset yoga. Plus, a modern fitness center, tennis and pickleball courts, and a climbable observation tower to help you get your steps in.
Golfers, meanwhile, will appreciate discounted green fees at the nearby Playa Mujeres Golf Club. It’s Greg Norman designed, 18 holes, and one of the region’s premier championship courses.

Secrets Playa Mujeres gets a lot right, but a few things stand out above the rest: an exceptional beachfront, dining that consistently exceeds all-inclusive expectations, beautifully refreshed accommodations, and a Preferred Club experience that’s genuinely worth the upgrade.
Whether you’re planning a romantic escape or a getaway with friends, this is the kind of resort where mornings begin with long walks along the shore, afternoons disappear between infinity pools and lingering ocean-view lunches, and evenings end over excellent cocktails — without ever feeling rushed.
