A low-density property, guests typically move about the vast resort grounds via walking, complimentary bicycles or complimentary golf cart rides. The latter, readily available and able to be pre-reserved with your dedicated Resort Host. If you’re lucky, you may even catch one of the resort’s traditional trajineras (flat-bottomed wooden boats) to dinner. They drift beside the lobby where they also depart daily for a complimentary eco-tour through Mayakoba’s glimmering waterways.

No bad room is an understatement at Banyan Tree Mayakoba. All 160 take the form of your own private villa or oceanfront suite, complete with private heated pool, rainshower (some double as steam rooms), luxurious bath amenities, Nespresso machine (a vacation essential), and Banyan Tree’s signature, kimono-style robe.
Any resort where the lead-in room category is a nearly 3,000 square foot villa is my kind of resort, and here, the Bliss Pool Villa delivers. Imagine soaring ceilings, a thoughtful sitting area and outdoor stone soaking tub for two (ask your Resort Host for help lighting the backdrop of atmospheric votives), all before stepping out onto your sprawling garden patio to relax on the sundeck or go for a dip in your wraparound swimming pool.
The Wellness Sanctuary Pool Villa further boasts a bubbling jacuzzi tub and curated in-room wellness amenities, while several Two and Three-Bedroom Villas, as well as Family Residences, offer plenty of space for the whole crew. Those seeking something special will want to consider one of the new, overwater Lagoon & Sunset Rooftop Pool Villas – there are only seven. Dreaming of waking up to salt air and a gentle sea breeze? You’ll want to go for one of the new beachside rooms, ranging from upper-level Oceanfront Balcony Pool Suites with spectacular sea views (I can personally attest) to Beachfront Lanai Pool Suites with direct step-out access onto the powder-soft sand.

With over 10 restaurants, bars and unique culinary experiences to choose from at Banyan Tree Mayakoba, you really are spoilt for choice. Standouts count signature dining concept Saffron, transporting guests to Thailand along a series of enchanting outdoor decks and terraces floating above the shimmering Mayakoba waterways. I’m still dreaming about the Massaman curry with grilled short rib. At Cello – a love letter to Italy with romantic lagoon-side seating – the Delicatezza (lavish cheese & charcuterie board), bone-in ossobuco and rosemary panna cotta are all musts. Amaro fans, don’t miss the Deep Cacao Negroni.
La Copa Mexican Terrace Bar is an easy choice for pre or post-dinner libations and antojitos (little cravings), transforming into a festive Mexican Night every Saturday. Think free-flowing margaritas, authentic regional fare and a traditional, al pastor trompo – all set to the vibrant sounds of a live mariachi band. At the beach, Sands churns out fabulous, all day surf n’ turf cuisine and cocktails with a view. The spicy tuna roll was delightful; catch of the day perfectly grilled. Save room for the the churros. Next door, Sur Beach Club offers a similar menu of elevated beachside bites exclusively for adults.
Looking for something more unique? You can elevate room service with Banyan Tree’s signature in-villa BBQ, head into the jungle for an immersive dining experience paying homage to the region’s ancient Maya inhabitants, or reserve the aforementioned trajinera for an idyllic sunset tapas cruise or romantic, floating dinner under the stars.

Private pool dips aside, you’re bound to venture over to any of Banyan Tree Mayakoba’s glistening main pools for further poolside luxuriating. Or, sink your feet into the powder-white beachfront. Feeling active? You can join a game of pool or beach volleyball (a spirited match of guests vs. staff went down on my recent stay), take out a complimentary kayak, or explore Mayakoba’s one-mile stretch of sand on a leisurely stroll. At Sands, families with little ones will appreciate the on-site Rangers Kids Club – offering daily activities, adventures and discovery for children ages 5-12.
Those seeking a more tranquil experience can head over to neighboring Sur Beach Club. This idyllic seaside haven features two palm-fringed pool decks, a beautifully combed beachfront and toes-in-the-sand dining. All, exclusively reserved for adults only.

The spa’s guided, rainforest-inspired hydrotherapy circuit is one of the best I’ve experienced – well worth reserving prior to your treatment or simply to enjoy as a standalone experience. It’s blissful, immersive and designed to accommodate solo guests, couples or small groups. For something more rooted, try the temazcal: an ancient Maya purification ritual led by Banyan Tree’s resident shaman. On the palm-shaded wellness deck, consider joining daily, expert-led activities like sunrise yoga, breathwork. sound meditation or conscious grounding.
Seeking something more active? In addition to Banyan Tree’s state-of-the-art fitness center, you’ll find several wellbeing activities available throughout the greater Mayakoba reserve. Options are plentiful, ranging from golf and scuba diving to tennis, pickleball and archery. Plus, guided tours of the winding mangroves on kayak or hydro bike.
On land, don’t miss Mayakoba’s 3-mile Nature Trail. The path is flat, largely shaded, and able to be explored on foot or complimentary bikes. Along the route you’re bound to encounter El Pueblito, a charming shopping and dining destination modeled after a traditional Mexican town square. Here, a stop for tostadas and mezcal at La Fondita is obligatory.
